The 2010 Black History Expo

On Saturday, February 13th, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., the Maywood Public Library District sponsored a Black History Expo with displays from vendors, community groups, local artists, and the West Town Museum of Cultural History. The theme of this year’s Expo was Economic Reciprocity: Black Economic Empowerment.

In addition to displays, the Library featured local authors, a sampling of soul food, and entertainment.  There was a re-showing of the Smithsonian documentary entitled Soul of a People: Writing American’s Story, which included a discussion of the slave narratives that were recorded during the Federal Writers Project of the late 1930’s (click here to see our resources on the slave narratives).

Local author, Stan West, had copies of his new book Suburban Promised Land, and Bill Hampton, brother of the late Fred Hampton, had copies of the recently published book by Jeffrey Haas entitled The Assassination of Fred Hampton.

This event was free and open to the public.
